3. Indian scientists will soon join a growing international community of researchers looking for super-earths outside the solar system. Announced on 5th Jan 2013, a new telescope is to be set up by Bangalore-based scientists in the Himalayas. The work on this world’s largest solar telescope is likely to commence in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir by the end of this year. While the Rs 300-crore NLST will study the sun, the facility can also be used at night to look for planets outside the solar system. The NLST is expected to be ready by 2017. What is NLST?
