The State Assembly, on Friday 21 December 2012, enacted a landmark legislation by unanimously passing the Food Security Act, becoming the first state in the country to introduce such a law, covering several deprived sections of society left out by existing welfare programmes. The state Chief Minister told the House that the provisions of the bill ensured that adequate quantity of quality food will be available at affordable prices to nearly 50 lakh families. The new provisions will add a burden of Rs 2,311 crore on the state exchequer. 2. Barack Obama nominated one of America's top diplomat, on Friday, 21st Dec 2012, to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. In contrast to Mrs. Clinton, whom Mr. Obama named to his cabinet after they competed against each other in the 2008 presidential primaries, the new Secretary has been a loyal supporter of the Obama administration, guiding an arms-reduction treaty with Russia to ratification in the Senate and playing diplomatic troubleshooter for the White House in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sudan. 3. New Jersey-based Cognizant, on Friday, announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire six companies of the C1 Group, an independent consulting and IT services firm. While the deal value was not disclosed, a company spokesperson said that Cognizant expected an annualised revenue of $100 million to come from the acquisition. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2013. Where is the C1 Group firm based?
