1. Afzal Guru, convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack, was hanged in Tihar Jail on Saturday, 9th February 2013, in an operation shrouded in secrecy. "Afzal Guru was hanged at 8 am," Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said shortly after the execution of the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant. The mercy plea of 43-year-old Guru, who was sentenced to death in 2002 by a special court and later upheld by the Supreme Court in 2004, was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee a few days back. He is the second Kashmiri militant who has been hanged after JKLF leader ___________________ who was executed on February 11, 1984.

2. India's fastest supercomputer developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) was inaugurated by J Satyanarayana, secretary, department of electronics and information technology on Friday, 8th February 2013. The supercomputer has been upgraded to 524 teraflops, about 10 times faster than the present facility. With an investment of Rs 16 crore, it was developed in a record three months. 3. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Friday slapped a hefty penalty on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for indulging in anti-competitive practices. Stating that the BCCI had abused its dominant position, the CCI directed it to desist from any practice denying market access to potential competitors, including inclusion of similar clauses in any future agreement. The penalty amount needs to be deposited within 90 days of receipt of the order. The CCI noted that the BCCI’s economic power was enormous as a regulator, enabling it to pick winners. The board gained tremendously financially from the IPL format. The complaint against the BCCI was referred to the Commission’s Director General (DG) in December 2010. Police have registered an FIR against Union Minister of State and the member of Congress Party Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for "leading a mob" that "attacked and ransacked" the bungalow of the district magistrate of Murshidabad on Thursday. Hundreds of Congress workers, led by Chowdhury and some Congress MLAs, ransacked the house of Rajiv Kumar after he reportedly refused to meet them. They had gone to complain about the alleged custodial death of a party worker in January. The mob smashed flower pots, pulled down a sun shed, hurled bricks and damaged a vehicle.
